Achille Lauro Meets Its End

The Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro on fire in the Indian Ocean, 150 miles off the coast of Somalia, on Nov. 30, 1994. The cruise ship was carrying 1,000 passengers when the fire broke out on board. Two people died in the accident.

Even before its sinking, the Achille Lauro was an embattled ship. In 1985, Palestinian terrorists hijacked it, killing a 69-year-old hostage.
