MO

Maker: Interlude Consortium
Based: Paris
Price: Not for sale

The first-place winner in Georgia Tech's 2011 Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition, MO is software that turns everyday objects into electronic instruments by responding to variations in motion. Users can create sounds by gesturing with objects-such as kitchen whisks and cheese graters, for example-with an attached MO device. The Institute for Research and Coordination Acoustic/Music conceived of the device almost 10 years ago as a small wireless motion sensor that could be used with a violin bow. "It is not for sale at the moment, but we are currently investigating various options to commercialize the instruments," says Frederic Bevilacqua, coordinator of the project in Paris.
