Petroleum accounts for almost half of Kuwait's gross domestic product and 95 percent of its exports and government income. In 2010, the country approved a plan to spend $130 billion over five years to diversify the economy.

Gas prices aren't felt much by Kuwaitis, who are the third-biggest consumers of gasoline, after the U.S. and Canada. The average daily income in Kuwait is $123. The share of a day's wages needed to buy a gallon of gas is 0.7 percent.
