His Very Own Downton Abbey

Andrew J. Hall, the former Citigroup oil trader who once scored a $100 million pay package, had a turn as public enemy no. 1 in the battle over outsized Wall Street bonuses. Four years later, Max Abelson discovered what Hall has been doing with some of his money. Following up on a tip that Hall had been assembling property in rural Vermont, Abelson drove to Reading, Vermont, to find the town that Hall has been restoring to a bucolic ideal. Abelson deftly captures the contradictions of great wealth, in which a fortune made through modern oil trading subsidizes a fantasy farm complete with heritage chickens and artisanal maple syrup.
