Brendan Ravenhill Opener

John Maeda wrote the book on simplicity. Literally. He believes that design can transform the economy of the 21st century by simplifying technology. His favorite things are simple, too.

The $14 Brendan Ravenhill bottle opener is made of a wedge of beech wood or walnut, a single nail and two magnets. The rustic design belies its functionality. One magnet grabs the bottle cap after you pop the bottle; the second magnet sticks this beauty to the fridge.

“The wood brings warmth, the nail brings familiarity,” Maeda says. “The overall cleverness of the design projects a spontaneous kind of pride.”
