The 134 recycled shipping
containers used to construct the Bharathi Research Station
in northeastern Antarctica are easy to erect, disassemble and transport. Bof Architekten of Hamburg, Germany, which won the contract from the National Center for Antarctic and Ocean Research, wrapped the massive containers with an insulated, aerodynamic skin of metal panels
that can withstand extreme temperatures. The site is entirely
self-sufficient, using renewable
sources of energy, in compliance with the terms of the Antarctic Treaty.
