'Rigorous Simplicity'

Libin thinks a lot about food. The logo for the Evernote Food app, which is made for people who love to log their meals, is a single sushi roll. Sushi can inspire creativity in designers, he said.

"There's a focus on the minor details," Libin said. "We try to have a similar attention. It's the thing that the vast majority of people would never notice that makes a product really enjoyable."

Libin loves Japanese food. The refrigerators in Evernote's Redwood City, California-based headquarters are stocked with bottles of Oi Ocha iced green tea, one of the CEO's favorite drinks. Earlier this year, a prominent Japanese chef came weekly for "Sushi Wednesdays" in the office.
