Aiming for the API

Savvis, which provides cloud computing services to large companies and is a subsidiary of Monroe, Louisiana-based Internet provider CenturyLink, said in 2012 it was seeing 400 attacks per month on its application programming interface. Attacks against the API, which is a public connection to Savvis's systems, show hackers' attempts to steal customer data. The number of attacks was growing 25 percent per quarter.

The attacks were not nearly as extensive as the daily assaults on better-known companies that deal with hundreds, or even thousands, of attacks a day. However, the figures show that hackers are refining their techniques for breaking into cloud providers.
