Sandy Aid Block

Five months after Hurricane Sandy pummeled the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut areas, the federal budget cuts are bringing more bad news to the region. Sequestration may block as much as $2.5 billion in Sandy relief funds, according to New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez's spokesman, Paul Brubaker. About $1 billion may be taken from Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster-relief funds and $1.5 billion may be held from block grants and transportation funding, Terrence Dopp and Elise Young report. “This manufactured fiscal disaster will add insult to injury to the many families and businesses that are still hurting across the region,” Representative Bill Pascrell Jr., a New Jersey Democrat, told homeowners affected by Sandy in Moonachie on Feb. 25.
