Eastern Mental Bloc

During one of three televised presidential debates with Democratic challenger Jimmy Carter in the fall of 1976, President Gerald Ford declared, "There is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe, and there never will be under a Ford administration." That was news to Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania and Poland. Carter said the president had "disgraced our country." Time magazine called it "the blooper heard round the world."
