In a 1999 interview with CNN, Vice President Al Gore said that by promoting legislation and funding that supported computer networking development, "I took the initiative in creating the Internet." This claim -- later supported even by Internet pioneers -- was subsequently shortened to "I invented the Internet," an example of how misquoted or out-of-context comments can become gaffes that stick. While it led to both heated debate and late-night jokes, even Newt Gingrich backed Gore up as "the person who, in the Congress, most systematically worked to make sure that we got to an Internet."
