State troopers have been at the center of three separate scandals worthy of the "-gate" suffix. In December 1993, the American Spectator reported that Arkansas state troopers had arranged sexual liaisons for Bill Clinton. In July 2007, news broke that then-New York Governor Eliot Spitzer had ordered state police to create special records of state Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno's locations. And in July 2008, then-Alaska Governor Sarah Palin created a stir when she fired the state's public safety commissioner, allegedly because he would not fire her former brother-in-law, a state trooper.
