Oil spill off Mumbai

Two commercial ships, the MSC Chitra and the MV Khalijia 3, collided on Aug. 7, 2010, outside Mumbai's Jawaharlal Nehru Port. The Chitra lost about 250 of its 1,219 containers overboard, including 31 that contained hazardous chemicals and pesticides. The Khalijia III spilled 879 tons of oil along Mumbai's coast. A three-day shutdown of India's container harbor to clean up debris stranded about $4 billion of overseas shipments.
