Singer-Songwriters at the New York Public Library

Josh Ritter, Wesley Stace and Steve Earle, singer-songwriters who also write fiction, held forth in a panel discussion at the New York Public Library last week.

Earle said a song usually takes him a day to write on a yellow legal pad. Writing novels requires a computer -- and patience. He spent eight years writing his latest, "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive,'' about Hank Williams and the doctor who was with him the night he died.
