Big Sur International Marathon

Monterey County, California

This Monterey County race is the largest rural marathon in the world—winding through majestic redwoods, bucolic ranches and the merciless hills of Highway One. While the climb to Hurricane Point, about halfway through the race, is probably the most challenging leg, once you reach Bixby Bridge you’ll be rewarded with jaw-dropping cliffs and a Pacific panorama. Don’t gawk too much, you only have six hours to finish—that’s 13:45 minutes-per-mile. (bsim.org)
