When she moved from Minnesota to St. Maarten for medical
school, AUC student Carina Crookston (holding toddler) brought her family, including her two daughters and her sister Michelle. The
36-year-old aspiring oncologist incurred $176,000 in federal loans for her
first five semesters at the school. She also had sticker shock just from the
cost of living in St. Maarten, where her first air-conditioning bill was $700
and had to be paid in cash.
