Sticker Shock

When she moved from Minnesota to St. Maarten for medical school, AUC student Carina Crookston (holding toddler) brought her family, including her two daughters and her sister Michelle. The 36-year-old aspiring oncologist incurred $176,000 in federal loans for her first five semesters at the school. She also had sticker shock just from the cost of living in St. Maarten, where her first air-conditioning bill was $700 and had to be paid in cash.
