Naps Are for Lazy People

If you learn your science from comics and cartoons, you’ll know what the Flat Earth Society knows: Naps are for lazy people. Just look at the evidence: Beetle Bailey, Homer Simpson, Garfield.

Scientists tell another story. Chris Hadfield, the Canadian astronaut who recently returned to Earth after commanding Expedition 35 on the International Space Station, loves to talk about his love for the siesta. “I’m a big believer in a short nap after lunch,” he wrote to his million Twitter followers in March. “No more than 20 minutes, recharges my batteries.”

Hadfield is in good company. Studies by NASA and other sleep researchers show that a 10-minute power nap boosts memory, alertness, and mental and physical performance, and even reduces the chance of heart disease. So where are the nap rooms at our corporate offices? No, seriously, where are they?
