Outdoor concerts are a tradition in the seaside town of Newport, most famously at this 54-year-old festival. So it’s only befitting that the Newport Folk Festival would be the site of some of music’s biggest firsts, including the national debut of Bob Dylan in 1963 and the place where he went electric two years later. Though Dylan’s decision to plug in received jeers from the crowd, it was also a turning point in the artist’s transition from folk hero to rock god.
