'Embarrassed'

Libin said he's ashamed he couldn't identify which part of China the picture depicts, in light of how important that country is to his company. Evernote was adding more than 10,000 users a day in China earlier this year. (It's the entrance to the Forbidden City in Beijing.)

He expects China to be influential in how products are designed in the future. People living in highly populated cities, with their skyscrapers and close quarters, have different needs than suburban families.

"China is where a whole lot of really great design innovation is coming from," Libin said. "The next giant leaps forward are very likely to come from dense, highly vertical places. They're not going to be for the Palo Alto lifestyle, and they're not going to be invented in Palo Alto."
