F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet

Project cost: $51 billion

FY 2013 estimate: $2.1 billion

The newest F/A-18 wasn’t named the Super Hornet by accident. The small, all-weather fighter and attack jet can fly at almost twice the speed of sound and sting with 20 mm cannons, homing missiles and laser-guided bombs. At about $57 million each, the single- and double-seat jets came out of development on schedule, on budget and 400 pounds lighter than planned, according to the Navy’s website.
