MacBook Pro (13 inch) with Retina display

Who makes it: Apple

What it costs: $1,699

Why we like it: Yes, it's a traditional laptop at a time when the whole world, including Apple, is turning to mobile devices. Yes, it has no optical drive. And yes, it costs an arm and a leg -- or two legs, if you start bumping up the capacity of the all-solid-state storage. But this slimmed-down, souped-up version of Apple's workhorse Mac is state of the art in terms of long-lived, full-featured, compact computing. And man, is that Retina display gorgeous.
