Catching the Porn Virus
Fans of a pornographic genre of Japanese anime found themselves the target of a malware attack in 2010. People who downloaded illegal copies of certain "hentai" games had their Internet histories scraped and posted to a public website along with their name. The users then got e-mails or pop-up messages demanding payment to take down the postings. The fees were described as settlements for the users' copyright violations, but they were nothing more than a shakedown.
