Pets.com sock puppet

The celebrity attained by the Pets.com sock puppet is astounding, especially considering how briefly the company was in business. The short-lived Internet outfit hired TBWA Chiat/Day, the marketing firm behind Apple's "1984" and "Think Different" ad campaigns, to design the mascot.

The sock dog could be the poster child of the dot-com bust. Voiced by comedian Michael Ian Black, the puppet appeared in numerous commercials, including during the 2000 Super Bowl, was invited to do talk shows and had a balloon in the 1999 Macy's Thanksgiving parade. Its fame couldn't save the company, though, which went from inception to a public offering to kaput in two years.
