Proteus Biomedical specializes in so-called ingestible event markers, swallowable sensors the size of a grain of sand that can be used to monitor medicine use by patients. Made from food ingredients, the devices are activated by stomach fluids and work in tandem with small, bandage-like skin patches or tiny devices implanted under the skin to track drug levels, as well as vital signs such as a person's heart rate. Proteus plans to introduce the first commercially available product based on these technologies this year.
