The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic games have already entered the history books as the most expensive ever staged, having cost $51 billion to build and host. Russian President Vladimir Putin is using the games to transform the Soviet-era summer resort into a year-round destination.

While the 230-athlete American team is the largest in Winter Olympics history, nations such as Togo and Tonga will be making their debuts. Eighty-seven nations will compete in 98 events across 15 winter sport disciplines; from the terrifying speeds of the skeleton downhill event to the majestic ski jumping, in which competitors can cover distances of over 140 meters.

The opening ceremony, showcasing Russian discoveries and creations through the ages, is now over and the serious business of going for gold has begun.
