Japan's long-standing national gasoline tax helped the country's carmakers take an early lead in developing fuel-efficient vehicles.

The average daily income is $129, and the share of a day's wages needed to buy a gallon of gas is 5.2 percent. Despite the country's small size and dense urban populations, Japanese consume about a third more gas per capita than the average.
