Computer File in the Cake

High-tech prison breaks are usually the stuff of movies. Unfortunately, as a team of security researchers found, such scenarios can be very real.

In 2011, John Strauchs, Tiffany Rad and Teague Newman inspected a correctional facility — they wouldn't say which one — and found vulnerabilities in the computer system. Hackers could remotely open and close the facility's doors, suppress alarms and tamper with video surveillance feeds.

The threat of physical breaches goes way beyond prisons. As more commercial buildings and private homes are connected amid the push toward the so-called Internet of Things, bad-guy hackers will no doubt be looking for new ways to quietly unlock those doors.
