Amsterdam

The picturesque Dutch capital is widely regarded as one of the most bike-friendly cities on Earth, and justifiably so. Still, when you want to peel away from hordes of tourists in the city center, it’s only a (free!) five-minute ferry ride from Centraal Station to Waterland, an idyllic region of green fields and marshes dotted by nine historic towns. Bike-specific signposts point the way from village to charming village, each of which have excellent cafes, restaurants, and bars for refueling. It’s possible to put together a day of touring from 15 to 50-plus miles, and still be back in the city center in time for dinner.
