Hotel Nickel-and-Diming Hits an All-Time High

The hotel industry collected $2.1 billion in fees and surcharges in 2013—up from $2 billion the year before. We’re all accustomed to “resort fees” that are basically surcharges for using a hotel’s facilities, but the latest crop of surprise fees includes charges for early check-in, early departure, mini-bar restocking, baggage holding by the bellman, use of the in-room safe, and mandatory valet parking.
