Conjuring Up Marley's Ghost

This is Sue Beatrice's second season as a professional carver. The N.J.-based artist got into the medium when fellow sculptor Andy Gertler, owner of Pumpkin Sculpt USA, asked if she'd be interested in carving pumpkins at the Bronx Zoo.

Her first test piece was a summer squash -- pumpkins weren't in season yet -- that she carved into Marley's ghost from Charles Dickens' Christmas Carol. She stopped counting how many pumpkins she's carved at 100. As founder of Beatrice Designs, she does commercial sculptures for the toy and gift industry; her client list includes companies such as Disney, Warner Bros. and American Greetings.
