Disaster Strikes Again

Fewer farmers took advantage of the program, triggering disaster payments such as the $3.4 billion rescue following a major drought in 1988. That heat wave caused 7,500 deaths nationwide and almost $79 billion in losses (as measured in 2013 dollars). Extreme weather, including historic floods in 1993, triggered 38 more relief bills giving farmers $68.7 billion in disaster aid from fiscal years 1989 to 2009.
