Housing Losses

Rental assistance vouchers may be eliminated for about 125,000 poor individuals and families, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan told a Senate panel on Feb. 14. Over 100,000 formerly homeless people could also lose housing, and program reductions could cause some homeless shelters "to close down altogether," Donovan said. About 75,000 households would lose access to housing counseling and 900 Native American families would be unable to receive housing loan guarantees. Rental assistance from the Agriculture Department could also be eliminated for 10,000 low-income rural residents, who make $803 a month on average, Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a Feb. 5 letter to Congress.
