Price of Patent Wars
How fierce has the competition in the mobile industry become? Samsung Electronics was told to pay Apple $1.05 billion in a U.S. patent ruling in August. Apple contended that Samsung had copied many of the software and hardware design elements that made the iPhone and iPad unique. The Korean technology giant suffered another defeat in October, when the U.S. International Trade Commission ruled that Samsung was infringing on four of Apple's patents.
Patent skirmishes have become the norm in the mobile industry, including companies such as HTC, Google's Motorola Mobility, Nokia and Research in Motion.
