Whirlwind Roughrider Wheelchair

Whirlwind Wheelchair International
Cost: $220 to manufacture

The World Health Organization estimates that in developing countries, wheelchairs are needed for 20 million people, or 1 out of every 300 people. They require chairs that can handle uneven terrain and are portable, easy to repair and suitable for both work and childcare. The Roughrider's adjustable seat has 15 settings. Rear wheels are easily replaceable bicycle tires.

More than 25,000 Roughrider chairs have been distributed, at 20 percent the cost of a comparable chair in the U.S.
