Eigenharp

Maker: Eigenlabs
Based: Devon, U.K.
Price: £1,995 ($3,172) (starting)

The Eigenharp is a software-laden electronic instrument that combines a grid of keys, a touch-sensitive strip, and a breath pipe to produce a range of sounds and support functions, from layering multiple sounds to recording. Since its 2010 launch, Eigenlabs has sold about 1,300 of the instruments, with strong demand from Germany, says Sales Director Neil McDougall. Internet entrepreneur and musician John Lambert and a business partner invested £10 million ($16 million) in the project, with the goal of creating a portable, easy-to-set up device that is as expressive as traditional instruments.
