Who makes it: Sony

What it costs: $4,999

Why we like it: We'll start with this caveat: There's not a whole lot of full HD, or so-called 4K content, out there right now. But anyone looking to upgrade their television should consider investing in the technology that delivers resolution at double today's mainstream TV standard. Hollywood, consumer electronics companies and broadcasters are clearing hurdles now to bring the technology to the masses, and Sony's set delivers some of the best pictures we've seen with native 4K content and upscaling of other high-def programming. An accompanying $700 4K Ultra HD media player lets you download and store about 100 movies and some TV shows such as “Breaking Bad” from Sony's movie service. The company also tries to mitigate sticker shock by throwing in a year's free service for both Netflix and Hulu Plus.
