Channel Islands Ecoboard

Surf boards can be a messy business. They’re typically made of toxic epoxies and foam that’s built to last -- even in a landfill. The production of a 9-foot longboard has a 25 percent bigger carbon footprint than a flight from L.A. to Honolulu.

Sustainable Surf is a California-based nonprofit working to lessen the impact of the sport. Its Ecoboard project certifies environmentally safe materials that also reduce health risks to board designers.

“Surfing is about being with nature,” says Yves Behar, founder of design firm Fuseproject and designer of the Jawbone Jambox. Behar, a surfer, says Ecoboards by Firewire and Channel Islands are “a no-compromise green solution.”
