The toughest budget cuts in Spain's democratic history pushed the economy into a sixth quarter of contraction. Wages declined, and gas consumption fell 8.3 percent in December from a year earlier, according to Corporacion de Reservas Estrategicas de Productos Petroliferos, or Cores.

The percentage of income spent on gasoline was 1.1 percent, among the lowest. The average daily income is $77. The share of a day's wages needed to buy a gallon of gas is 9.1 percent.
