10. Hastings House Country House Hotel

It’s always nice to find so many charming, small hotels on the Readers’ Choice Awards list each year. These winners—none with more than 20 rooms apiece—may not be easy to get to (a Peruvian canyon, a volcanic Mediterranean crater rim), but reward with a little slice of heaven.

Salt Spring Island, Canada
Readers' Rating: 93.0; 18 Rooms

On a remarkably sunny Gulf Island west of Vancouver, this “British architect’s former estate from the 1940s” consists of 22 acres of well-tended harbor front gardens, a reproduction 11th-century Tudor-style Manor House (perfect for daily afternoon tea), and several renovated historic buildings. “It sounds trite, but the appropriate word for the place is picturesque.” All rooms have fireplaces and deep tubs. The dining room turns out delicious regional dinners like locally farmed lamb and duck.
