Mali, the West African country of 14.8 million inhabitants, is the world's 15th-biggest gold producer and Africa's third-largest, behind Ghana and South Africa.

The country produced 50 tons of the precious metal in 2012 -- an increase of 16 percent over 2011's output -- and Rangold Resources Ltd. played a significant role.
