Reaction on the Streets

Just like the split decision of the Supreme Court that the Defense of Marriage Act's core is unconstitutional, the reaction to the ruling on the streets of New York was mixed, though also with the majority in favor. Immediately after the ruling was announced Wednesday morning, we sent photographer M. Sharkey downtown to see how people felt about DOMA, Prop 8 and gay marriage. Here are their thoughts, in their own words, edited for length.

Jamie Lawyer, graduate student

It's an incredible victory. It's steps forward that are much needed in getting the equal rights that our community deserves. There are going to be some people who are going to be ecstatic; some people are probably going to be furious. There's a lot of hate in New York. As much as there's love, there's also hate. I think it, at least in the federal view, challenges people's preconceptions and definitions of what [marriage] can be.
