Girl With a Pearl Earring

The Dutch show at the de Young museum is a concise introduction to the Golden Age of art in the Netherlands, when the country was a global economic power and people were mad for paintings as well as tulips. Johannes Vermeer's lovely "Girl With a Pearl Earring" (1665) looks over her left shoulder at the viewer with an innocent gaze. It is the titular star of "Girl With a Pearl Earring: Dutch Paintings From the Mauritshuis," on view through June 2 at the de Young museum in San Francisco.
