The Continuing Cleanup

Superstorm Sandy devastated much of the northeastern seaboard on October 29, 2012, but one of the communities particularly hard hit was Rockaway, Queens, in New York. Many of the homes of the town's 130,000 residents were destroyed and federal and local aid were slow to reach the community.

Since the storm, groups of volunteers organized by various New York businesses including Gin Lane, Saturday Surf NYC, The Smile, Opening Ceremony, Raise Cache, Whitmans and Cantora Records, have traveled every weekend to the Rockaways to help relief efforts. They assist with "cleaning out buildings, repairing homes and delivering food, supplies, clothing and medicine to people in need," according to their event page on the web site Eventbrite.

Photographer Rachel Chandler was one of the volunteers and documented for Bloomberg.com some of the relief efforts still going on, one month later.
