An unusually early hot spell heralded the official start of summer, with temperatures climbing to the mid-90s, from Maine to the Carolinas. Heat indices hit 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) and the National Weather Service issued advisories for the region. In New York and Washington, D.C., temperatures reached 94 degrees before noon on Thursday. Philadelphia was 93 degrees and climbing, and Boston hit 92 degrees. Based on the heat index, the air felt several degrees hotter.
