Taft Starts the Show

President William Howard Taft started the tradition of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch on April 14, 1910, at National Park in Washington before a game between the Washington Senators and Philadelphia Athletics. The manager of the Senators, Jimmy McAleer, asked fellow Ohio native Taft to throw from his stadium box, launching the tradition.
