8. Mihama, Japan

Operated by Kansai Electric Power, Mihama Unit 1 opened on Nov. 28, 1970. In November 2010, it became only the second Japanese nuclear plant to have its 40-year operating license extended.

A family swims in front of the power station, 350 kilometers (220 miles) west of Tokyo, in August 2004. Days earlier, a leak killed four workers and injured several others at Mihama's younger Unit 3.
