7. Rice University (Tied)

The Houston-based university has bred some top business talent, including Mark Durcan, who runs Micron Technology, the largest U.S. maker of computer-memory chips, and Jim Whitehurst, the CEO of the open-source software developer Red Hat. After Lanham Napier graduated, he didn't have to go far from campus for his current job as the boss at Rackspace Hosting. His company, which provides Web-based computing services, is based in San Antonio.

Among Rice's non-academic draws: Beer Bike, which the school describes as a "combination intramural bicycle race and drinking competition." Sounds like good training for running a tech startup.
