James Crowe, who recently stepped down as CEO of Level 3 Communications, had a compensation package that included $23.9 million in stock and $13.2 million in options. Those lump-sum awards covered the entirety of his three-year employment contract.

Shares of the Broomfield, Colorado-based broadband services provider have fallen 6 percent this year, giving the company a market value of $4.8 billion.
