'Our Mortal Enemy'

Paper is one of the oldest note-taking tools, and perhaps Evernote's primary competition, Libin said. "We were kind of in this war against paper."

Last year, Evernote declared a ceasefire. The company announced a partnership with Moleskine, the Italian maker of a kind of notebook once favored by Ernest Hemingway, to create an Evernote-branded notepad that integrates with the service. They've sold "hundreds of thousands" of the notebooks, Libin said.
