The NRA, founded in 1871, claims to be a leader in firearms education with over 55,000 certified instructors who now train about 750,000 gun owners a year, according to its website. NRA Chief Executive Wayne LaPierre said at a recent press conference, "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," as his organization enjoys a 54 percent favorable opinion among Americans, according to a recent Gallup poll, and a membership 4 million strong.
